Don't Mow - Let It Grow
A talk by Sussex artist Nessie Ramm
2.30pm-3.00pm
All welcome to this free event

Toadflax, woundwort, goat’s-beard, viper’s bugloss: the names read like a 16th Century Herbal. But if you’re looking for our native wildflowers you might struggle to find them in the countryside, where intensive methods can leave little habitat. Instead, turn your attention to the verges alongside Britain’s road network. There you will find these plants from a lost bucolic era, now thriving undisturbed on roundabouts, slip roads and in litter-strewn lay-bys. Nessie is on a mission to raise awareness and to re-wild our local area.

Join us for what promises to be a fascinating talk, followed by Q&A, and enjoy a complimentary glass of English sparkling wine or soft drink on us. Nessie will be around until 3.30ish for post-talk chat.
Saturday 25th March 2023
Seventies Seaside Stories
A talk by Kent artist Giles Whitehead
2.30pm-3.00pm
All welcome to this free event

Born in 1970, Giles grew up on a farm in Tenterden, Kent. The farm and countryside have always influenced his work and inspired his passion for working with wood, both in painting and sculpture. Giles studied at The Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone. Before working full time as an artist, he taught Art at The Notting Hill and Ealing High School for Girls and at The Malling School in Kent.
His images come from observations, memories and imagination, creating a sense of place, a moment in time; a small, visual story that has clarity but also leaves areas for interpretation. Join us for what promises to be a fascinating talk, followed by Q&A, and enjoy a complimentary glass of English sparkling wine or soft drink on us. Giles will be around until 3.30ish for post-talk chat.

Meet the Artist: Jude Askey-Brown
6.30pm Talk with Q&A
complimentary drinks

Jude Askey-Brown is an oil painter whose current work focuses on domestic interiors: still life, responses to textures, colour and how objects tell a story. Her works also reflects a love of vintage homeware, which gives a nostalgic feel to the paintings:
“I love the selection of objects, the patterned plates, teacups, milk jugs and embroidered tablecloths. The arrangements and placement of these on a surface and how it tells a story to the viewer. Who is taking tea? What will happen next? Light is so important to me - how it falls and creates shapes, shadows, highlights and mood, morning light, cool light, evening glow, dappled light, and how this all affects your senses.”
Join us to hear more about Jude's background, her work and techniques.
Approx end 7.15pm

Meet the Artist: Nessie Ramm
2.30pm Talk with Q&A

Toadflax, woundwort, goat’s-beard, viper’s bugloss: the names read like a 16th Century Herbal. But if you’re looking for our native wildflowers you might struggle to find them in the fields, where intensive methods disrupt their habitat. Instead, turn your attention to the verges alongside Britain’s road network. There you will find these plants from a lost era, now taking refuge on roundabouts, slip-roads and in litter-strewn lay-bys.
Nessie Ramm is on a mission to paint the road verges of Britain in exquisite detail on to metal road signs; to render visible the wildness and value of these unloved spaces. Her work is both a joyful celebration of what she finds and a call to re-evaluate our relationship with the natural world.

Come and hear Nessie talk about her work and about local efforts to rewild the Wealden landscape.
